I need some tips

Hey Blog Friends,

I have two things I really need your advice about:

1. Can you tell me some healthy infant finger foods you serve your kids? Gianna is 10 months and really wants to feed herself but I need some ideas of what to give her. So far she is eating, sliced turkey, cheddar cheese, eggs, bread, salmon, hamburger meat, cheerios, banana and cantaloupe.

2. I am on the war path to get rid of this baby weight so does anyone have any tips for low calorie snacks and foods they eat. My friend Annie introduced me to Vitatops and they are great! Tastes like you are having a treat but they are only 100 calories and full of good vitamins.

All comments are appreciated from all bloggers or blog readers:)

Thanks a million!

Hey Julie - first thing comes to mind is fruit, especially since there are so many in season right now. Johnny loved eating grapes...I had to either peel them (kind of a pain) or just half or quarter them so he didn't choke. Also plums, nectarines, peaches, oranges, pears, apples (if you cook them a bit so they're softer)...I think you have to wait until 1 yr to do strawberries? Dried fruit is also good.

You probably already do this, but you could toast bread and cut it into strips/sticks for her. Also maybe whole grain pretzel sticks (TJ's has bigger/thicker ones that are nice). I also like the Annie's brand cheddar bunnies. And cooked pasta is good, too. You might also try mini meatballs.

I have a GREAT baby food cookbook called First Meals by Annabel Karmel that has other great ideas and yummy age-appropriate recipes. Hope that helps get you started! Yay Gianna! :)

Cooked sweet potato cubes is another in addition to the list already provided. You can buy dried fruit chips (no sugar added) in a box at costco that I think would be pretty safe for a 10-month old. They are in individual packages inside the box. Cubed multi-grain waffles and pancakes, eggs.

For you...I always try to choose snacks that are filling too. I can't eat the dairy right now, but string cheese, low-fat yogurt, appleas & small amount of peanut butter, small handful of almonds or walnuts, small serving of oatmeal sprinkled with brown sugar, pita bread and hummus (TJ's has the mini pitas), sweet potatos (you can make "fries" with cooking spray or a touch of olive oil and salt and pepper--or use sugar and salt for a sweet treat), popcorn (I prefer to pop my own not microwave bags), No Pudge brownies.

Hey Julie....
I still haven't lost all my baby weight, so I better not offer any advice there. :)
But, finger foods that you didn't mention, Madeline loves avocado, whole grain waffles or toast with a little butter, chicken, string cheese, peaches, veggie burgers...and I just tear most of this stuff into pieces for her. Start off small and then make them bigger as you feel more comfortable. Also, at this point, she could eat most fruits and veggies I think, as long as they are soft.
Hope this helps!

Hi Julie,
A great snack that is low cal is Akmak crackers from TJ's with laughing cow cheese wedges. They are low cal and delicious.

Another variation is Akmak with slices of avocado with a bit of seasoning salt on it.

ok, goodies for you, not G. i'm not a mama so i have nothing to suggest you on that one! but for your buds, try a few of these things:

pretzel thins. if crackers and pretzels were to have babies together, this is what their offspring would be. they are amazing!

tofu, the already cooked and marinated stuff. oober healthy and freaking amazing in flavor.

packaged salmon. comes in a bag and offers multiple choices for flavor.

at trader joes there is this pecan bleu cheese spread that is out of this world. diana would always whip up some appetizers with this stuff and veggies.

cottage cheese and grapes with black pepper.

black beans and crumbled feta.

roma tomatoes, cilantro, crumbled feta.

wait, wait, wait... oh dude, i forgot that you have like a billion different alergies or something. ahhh... try chomping on some grass.

love you!
